Yuzu Miso Caramel w’ Ice Cream French Toast
When added to desserts, a small quantity of miso can add a unique and slight savory element to the dish. This yuzu miso caramel sauce was initially inspired by a TikTok video about a miso pecan pie, and the idea blossomed from there when a Trader Joe’s brand Yuzu Miso Sauce was spotted. While advertised for savory dishes, this sauce has a lovely citrus flavor, and the slight saltiness of the miso is a perfect pairing for caramel. It is also very easy and uses just three ingredients—four if nuts are added.

Serves 1
1 Tbs Trader Joe's Yuzu Miso Sauce
1 Tbs Butter
3 tsp Sugar in the Raw
2 Tbs chopped nuts (optional)
Directions
Add all ingredients to a small saucepan. Warm on medium heat until slightly bubbly. Serve immediately.
Our take on Ice Cream French Toast was originally featured in the Winter 2022 issue of Poinciana Magazine. In that issue, we featured several variations/recipe ideas, but the base recipe remains the same.
ICE CREAM FRENCH TOAST BASE
1/3-1/2 cup of your favorite ice cream
1 egg yolk
2 slices of bread
A dash of salt (optional, depending on the ice cream flavor/topping)
Butter or cooking spray for cooking
Directions
Mix melted ice cream with egg yolk. Add salt.
Dip bread slices into the ice cream mixture and immediately add to a heated and oiled pan. Cook until golden brown.
YUZU FRENCH TOAST VARIATION
1/3-1/2 cup Yuzu Macaron Ice Cream (Häagen-Dazs brand was used)
1 egg yolk
2 slices bread (this recipe used Nature’s Own thick-cut brioche bread)
Cooking spray or butter for cooking
Cooking directions are the same as above.
This yuzu miso caramel recipe is a great topper for a simple and delicious Ice Cream French Toast, but the miso caramel sauce is also an excellent pie topping.
Store-Bought Pie Tip: If you have a blah store-bought sweet potato pie, take a slice and warm it on low in an air fryer for a few minutes. This makes the flavors intensify ever so slightly, and the top thickens just a bit—resulting in a warm and decadent pie.
