Have you ever experienced Junkanoo at sunrise?

I have attended Junkanoo at night with bleacher seats. I have rushed once before. And, I have also woken up after celebrating New Year’s Eve to head to Bay Street (after some sleep). And, I highly recommend not sleeping on Junkanoo at sunrise (no pun intended).

There is something special and magical about Junkanoo at night, and I highly recommend experiencing the parade in all its glory. But, Ine ga lie... outside of rushing, I don't have it in me to be there from the just after midnight start to the just before noon finish.

The first time I experienced Junkanoo in the morning hours, it was on a whim. This time was no different.

I got up shortly after 5am, got dressed and drove to Bay Street. When I got there, it was after sunrise. A few people had left so I had ample parking at the Western Esplanade.

Many of the groups were just starting their first laps, so there was also lots of energy left on Bay Street - especially for the Saxons. The streets and bleachers were still full come 10am as they were performing. And, despite probably being exhausted after an entire day of preparation, makeup, transport and waiting - they put on a show!!!

You also can't hide any sins in the daylight - and those costumes were stunning.

Another benefit of attending Junkanoo in the daytime is to support the performers. As the sun rises, the crowds start to thin out. Despite the performers still going hard - they are exhausted at this point. They need the cheers and support to keep going.

Once the Saxons had passed, we headed over to Picnic Brunch for breakfast/brunch and got to enjoy an amazing meal with unobstructed views of the last group - the Valley exhibition group. Their music was also exceptional and was a great soundtrack to the start of 2025.

If you have never experienced Junkanoo at sunrise, I highly recommend it. I danced, I had some colorful banter with my fellow Bahamians, I had a great meal, and fully enjoyed the beginning of the year.
